Overview

Pastoral Ministry (What is Preaching?)

Before we go into a study of the preacher and his work, let us consider the question, What is preaching? As defined from a variety of sources, here are some good definitions: proclaiming, expounding; boldly declaring. It may be considered as a more formal way of dispensing information when compared with teaching, which is giving information in a more relaxed manner by using a number of methods and techniques. A preacher should also teach, but a teacher rarely preaches. Contrary to what many people think, a preacher does not have to rant and rave to get a point across. Some people think of preaching as a boring way of getting a point over, and one dictionary gave as one definition the following: “To give religious or moral instruction, especially in a drawn-out, tiresome manner.” (American Heritage Dictionary, p.1030.) New Testament preaching came from men who were full of zeal, knowledge, energy, and power, and there is only one case of anyone falling asleep during a sermon. (Acts 20:9-10.)
