Think adults don't understand the incredibly tragic depths of teen suffering?
Conley Academy's gonna let you in on a little secret: All adults were teens once. Even your teachers were. And Speak's author, Laurie Halse Anderson, recalls the pain and humor of teendom so well, she's won billions of writing awards for it.
This unit is on Anderson's contemporary classic, Speak. It tells the story of Melinda Sordino, a high school freshman who was sexually assaulted the summer before starting ninth grade by the most popular boy in school. Shunned by her peers, misunderstood by her parents, and tormented by her past, Melinda has no one to speak to about her struggles.
(This doesn't count as a spoiler, btw—the book is called Speak; Anderson foreshadows like it's her job.)
Unlike Melinda's boring school schedule, this course has something for everyone. Artists? Creative writers? Professional Youtube surfers? Our lessons span a variety of themes and formats, all focusing on Melinda's journey. By the end of the course, you'll be wiser about tone, characterization, theme, foreshadowing, irony, detail, and…uh…life.
All equally important skills, if you ask us.
