Overview

Reflective Practice is the capacity to reflect on experience and subsequently engage in a continuous process of learning. Research frequently demonstrates that coaches learn by reflecting on practical coaching experience (Gilbert & Trudel, 2001). Reflection and experience have been identified as essential elements of coach education (Cushion, Armour, & Jones, 2003).

The early pioneering research conducted by Schön (1987) outlined the significance of three types of reflection, namely: reflection in action (during actual coaching), reflection on action after coaching has concluded) and retrospective reflection on action (at the end of a season).

Reflective Practice is a critical tool for sports coaches to draw significant learning from the practical coaching environment in which they work.

By the end of this module you will have:

  • Explored opportunities for learning and development within the coaching environment
  • Considered how reflective practice can enhance your coaching performance
  • Examined how you currently reflect and consider the effectiveness of this approach
  • Identified how you can use reflective practice, processes and tools to manage your own learning
  • Undertaken a period of deliberate reflective practice and analysed the effectiveness of this.
