Overview

In this course, we will improve oral communication competency through small-group discussions on health-related topics.

Focus will be placed on how to:

  1. listen actively,
  2. add to the conversation,
  3. clearly and correctly speak on topic, and
  4. think critically.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to…

  1. read a short text for gist and summarize it
  2. present a topic for discussion in a small group
  3. give and justify opinions on short texts and discussion topics
  4. use appropriate body language within small-group discussions

Evaluation

                     Attendance:     15%

         Class assignments:     40%

Homework assignments:     15%

Mid/final discussion test:     30%

Most authentic material will come from two websites: Science Daily (www.sciencedaily.com) and/or TED Talks (www.ted.com). There is no textbook.
