This package has been designed to assist midwives to set up a successful mentoring relationship with students on clinical placement.

A mentor facilitates a learner to translate theory into clinical practice. The mentor identifies and supports the potential of the learner, or mentee. There are three key elements to the mentoring role, these are:

  • Teaching
  • Support
  • Assessment

Although mentoring is sometimes thought of as a long term relationship, the principles of mentorship remain constant regardless of the duration of the encounter, be it one shift, a week, a month or a year.
