Welcome to the Course On Medical Electronics.
During the last two decades, there has been a tremendous increase in the use of electronic equipment in the medical field for clinical and research purposes. The field of biomedical engineering is fast developing and new departments are being established in universities, technical colleges, medical institutes and hospitals all over the world. With the widespread use and requirements of medical electronic instruments, it is essential to have knowledgeable service and maintenance engineers. Besides having a basic knowledge of the principles of operation, it is important for them to know the details of commercial instruments from different manufacturers.
This course covers the basic and advanced principles, concepts, and operations of medical sensors and devices. The origin and nature of measurable physiological signals are studied, including optical and electromagnetic signals. The principles and devices to make various measurement like Cardiovascular Measurements will be rigorously studied. This will be followed by study of diagnostic instruments such as EMG, EEG, ECG etc. The therapeutic instrumentation such as pacemakers, defibrillators and prosthetic devices will also be reviewed. The final part of this course will cover various imaging technologies such as X-ray, Ct-Scanning, Ultrasound Imaging etc. followed by a detailed discussion on Significance of electrical safety.
