COURSE DESCRIPTION

The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the discourse and cognitive aspects of writing academic essays, reports, projects and research articles. The course also focuses on reading skills to integrate critical reading with writing skills.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this course is to improve writing skills, reading skills, critical and analytical skills. Specifically, students are expected to

  1. Recognize academic style
  2. Recognize essay types
  3. Paraphrase and summarize
  4. Recognize and avoid plagiarism
  5. Give references
  6. Develop an argument
  7. Write a research paper

REQUIRED and SUGGESTED TEXTS

Required selected texts and compiled class notes will be provided by the instructor.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

ATTENDANCE:   This course requires an audience; therefore, attendance is especially important. The first two hours are the theoretical hours and the last two are the practical ones. Students are expected to attend %70 of the theoretical hours and %80 of the practical ones.

Unexcused absences exceeding (8+6) 14 hours will be graded as NA.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY and PLAGIARISM: In all of the work that you do for ENG 106, you will be expected to adhere to the academic integrity standards presented and practiced in class, including properly paraphrasing, quoting, and citing all sources used in oral and written work.  If you are ever unsure about how to comply with University of Turkish Aeronautical Association standards of academic integrity, please ask your instructor.

INSTRUCTOR’S EXPECTATIONS of STUDENTS:

  1. Attend every class session.
  2. Arrive at class on time (late comers with a reasonable excuse may attend the class within the first 5 minutes).
  3. Turn in all assignments on time.
  4. Be completely prepared to present on the assigned day. (Inform the instructor BEFORE class if you must be absent on the assigned day due to an illness or an emergency)
  5. Using smart phones for texting or playing games will not be tolerated by your instructor.
