ABOUT THE INSTITUTE

The Institute of Teachers Professional Development (ITPD) is a teachers training college that is registered by the Ministry of Education.

ITPD office is located in Nyaku House 1st floor above Barclays Bank, Argwings Kodhek Road, Hurlingham. The various training centers include St. Christopher’s School, Karen, Brookhaven Academy along Hillcrest Road (Karen), Merrystart school (Utawala), St. Austin's School (Lavington). ITPD was established in 2012 by an international NGO called International Collaboration for Community Development and Empowerment (INCCODE) with the Head Office in Hurlingham, Nairobi

The institute delivers high-quality teacher education where both 2-6-6-3 and international education system school teachers are able to acquire their KNEC certificate and diploma while still working in their school.

To ensure the delivery of high quality education, ITPD has prepared and compiled training notes and materials using the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) syllabus and prepares teachers for the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) certification.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

All candidates are evaluated both through internal and external examinations.

A) Internal Examination is prepared, marked and records kept by THE INSTITUTE. The marks are then forwarded to the KNEC, which constitutes 30% of the final examination for each examination paper.

B) Project Work is carried out by an individual trainee. It forms part of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation unit. The Project is internally and externally assessed and marks submitted to KNEC.

C) Attachment is done as part of internal assessment for a period of 4 weeks (one month). The trainee observes, records and reports the findings to THE INSTITUTE using the provided templates.

D) External Examination is conducted and marked by KNEC for the award of diploma certificate in Early Childhood Development and Education to successful candidates.

E) Teaching Practice is mandatory and MUST be passed by all students to qualify them for the award of diploma OR certificate in ECDE.

F) A Leaving Certificate is awarded by THE INSTITUTE after fulfilling the following conditions:

  • Attendance of all 6 holiday sessions AND/OR Tutorials
  • Sitting for all the internal examinations
  • Three month teaching practice
  • Research Project (Research papers)

G)   Award of KNEC Diploma

  • The diploma consists of six (6) written papers and (1) research project.
  • Candidates must take all the seven (7) papers at the first sitting.
  • Thereafter the candidate can sit for papers they fail or are referred in. A candidate who fails in more than two (2) papers will have to re-sit all the exam papers except the project paper if they had passed.

J) Admission Requirements

The Diploma students MUST meet any one of the following minimum qualifications;

  • (i) Be a P1 Certificate holder,           
  • (ii) Have KNEC certificate in ECDE.
  • (iii) Have a minimum of C (Plain) in KCSE.

The Certificate students MUST meet any one of the following minimum qualifications;

  • (i) Have KNEC Proficiency certificate in ECDE,
  • (ii) Have a minimum of D+ (Plus) or C- (minus) in KCSE.
