 This multimedia online course is focused on improving the end-of-life care for adults. Key topics are:

  • A ‘good death’: you will learn about the different understandings of what it takes to support a ‘good death’ including caring for those from other cultures. Predicting death and care pathways and frameworks are also explored.
  • Communication for end-of-life care: principles for effective communication (and reasons for failures in communication) with people who are dying and those around them are considered. You will develop an understanding of a well-established approach to communication through a series of written and video materiel. 
  • Grief and bereavement: looking at different theories of grief you will gain an understanding of the diverse ways in which it is experienced. Differences between people will be explored. You will take a critical look at how people who are grieving are supported.
  • Doing the right thing - ethics in end-of-life care: you will develop an applied understanding of core ethical principles and processes in end-of-life care. Issues particular to end-of-life care will be discussed in relation to difficult situations in end-of-life care - decision making, truth telling, informed consent, mental capacity and advance plans including ‘do not attempt resuscitation’ orders.

Whether you want to be the 'go to' person among your circle of family and friends, serve as a volunteer or advocate, or serve in private practice - this program will give you the tools you need to help the dying.

Students will learn how to be an active listener, how to help a dying person and family plan for the atmosphere around the bedside, as well as use touch, holding of the patient, music, readings, and ritual. 

Course Requirements:

Quizzes and Final Exam

Quizzes and Final exam will cover material from the texts, additional readings, lectures and discussions, video clips and films. In addition to questions assessing factual knowledge of the topics discussed, tests items will also ask you to apply your knowledge to real-world situations. In order to do well in this class, you must read and understand the texts, watch the video clips and films, and complete the assignments.  

Class Participation   

Participation  -This portion of your grade is general assessment of how you participate throughout the class. There are many ways to participate. Ask questions and join in discussions. When you think of something afterward or find some article or website that is related to course topics, you can share and submit written comments in the class forum. 

While you can receive high grades for participating actively, you can also lose points for dominating the conversation, particularly when comments are off topic. You cannot get an “A” for the class participation portion of this course without regular participation.

Assignments- There are 20 Homework assignments listed under tasks that you must complete.Each is worth up to 25 points. In order to receive credit for an assignment, you must be complete all portions of the assignment and attach any files as instructed. Each written assignment  should be typed and double-spaced.  Use a 12-point font size and 1 inch margins. Check spelling and grammar because grades may be lowered for these types of errors.

This scale will be used for assignments and final course grades.
