Overview

In this course, we will improve oral communication competency through both informal discussions and formal academic-style presentations. Discussions and presentations will mainly focus on describing health-related topics using easy, non-technical terminology.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to…

  1. summarize science-related topics using easy, non-technical terminology
  2. ask appropriate questions and respond to them during discussions and presentations
  3. use the internet and/or other English resources to find reliable, current health-related information
  4. create basic academic Power Point presentation slides/poster in English
  5. provide peer evaluations on presentation performance

Evaluation

      

                            Attendance:      15%

                 Class assignments:      40%

                      Weekly Quizzes:      15%

               Poster presentation:      10%

           Final oral presentation:      20%

 

Attendance is required. Attendance is evaluated on a 6-point scale. Points are given when students actively participate in class and subtracted when students are late, sleep or do things not related to the class activity. All students must tap in by 9:10 to receive any attendance points. Six absences is automatic failure of the class. 

Class assignments include 1) summarising four news articles (two by teacher and two by student) from Sciencedaily.com; 2) summarising six Ted Talks (three by teacher and three by student); 3) peer feedback of poster presentation; 4) peer feedback of oral powerpoint presentation; and 5) asking questions to presenters during poster and oral sessions.

Weekly quizzes will test vocabulary knowledge of teacher and student articles/talks.

Comments

Students are expected to prepare for poster and oral presentations outside of class time. It is recommended to have regular access to some form of portable electronic device (e.g., tablet, notebook PC) for use in- and outside the class.

Textbook

Most authentic material will come from two websites: Science Daily (www.sciencedaily.com) and/or TED Talks (www.ted.com). There is no textbook.
