Competency Based Health Management E-Course for Medical Students

Medical students are potential doctors being prepared for the world at large. The focus of their training is often on how to provide clinical services, however, knowledge on how to manage the various resources at their disposal in providing this service is most times lacking in their training.

Doctors have an obligation to be effective managers, work cohesively with multidisciplinary teams as health service is heterogeneous in nature. They must be knowledgeable in the efficient use of resources, play a role in setting and developing priorities, and take the lead in improving the provision of health care within their practice. To achieve all these, medical doctors must be equipped with sound managerial and leadership skills during their pre-service training.

The focus of this course is to provide the students with the required skills and competencies needed by them as Health managers in the early days of their practice as Medical Doctors. The course is not aimed at making them a specialist in Health Management. However, the very basic knowledge needed to do their work well and achieve their set objectives will be taught.   

There will be four Modules in the course namely

Module 1: Skills for Effective Leadership and Management

Module 2: Team Management

Module 3: Conflict Management

Module 4: Ensuring Quality Service Delivery

Target Audience: Final Year Medical Students

Learning Objectives and Outcomes:

  1. Ensure that 100% of the graduating final year medical students from the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife score 50% or more on leadership and management assessment examinations.
  2. Ninety percent of graduating final year medical students from the OAU, Ile-Ife score 50% or more in the examinations assessing their competence in Team Management, Conflict Management and features of quality health service delivery.


  1. Improved managerial and leadership skills of practicing physicians
  2. Improved inter-professional working relationships
  3. Improved health systems.


The students should know that their assessments in examinations will not preclude the lectures already provided in class. Rather, it will consist primarily of the lectures and materials already provided in class and in addition the materials provided on the e-learning platform.
