All children regardless of their race, socio-economic status and religion have rights, which must be safeguarded by those who care for them and especially their parents, other caregivers, teachers and the government. It is only when children have their rights safeguarded that they will realize their full potential in life.

The purpose of this COURSE is to help learner understand the child, child rights and protection and the legal structures put in place for the protection of children. This knowledge will assist the learner to safeguard the rights of the child in order to help the children realize their maximum potential.

Objectives of this Course

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  1. Define relevant terms and concepts used in relation to the rights of the child

  2. Discuss the types of needs for children

  3. Discuss the importance of using the rights approach in programming for children

  4. Identify and explain the main categories of the rights of the child

  5. Identify and explain the main instruments that provide for the rights of the child
  6. Describe the principles governing the understanding of the rights of the child

  7. Discuss how the rights of the child can be safeguarded at the family, community, ECD centers and primary schools

  8. Demonstrate the ability to safeguard the rights of the child in your interactions with children.


Course Expectations: Students are expected to read all the material posted, participate on online discussions, and successfully take every test at the end of the course.

This is a self-paced course, and therefore students have the opportunity and responsibility to work independently to complete all the lessons of this course. This course is set up as a 12-lecture class. Students are expected to complete every lecture and read all the provided material in order to successfully complete the class.

At the end of each lecture, there is an activity.  These activities will NOT be submitted but they are meant to ensure that the learner takes a moment to think about what has been learnt

Academic Integrity: Plagiarism and cheating are considered to be unacceptable behaviors and will not be tolerated by the Lecturer/Instructor. 

Grading Criteria: There is one TASK at the end of all the lectures. Please note that students must get 80% questions correct in order to get credit for the course.  Students can take the QUIZ 3 times before submitting for grading.
