This workshop is designed to develop the students’ basic understanding of computer applications. The workshop aims to empower students by enabling them to use computers effectively to enhance their studies.  The knowledge gained in this workshop will be easily transferable to specific work production and computing platforms.

By the end of the workshop the students will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between hardware, software, input, processing and output devices
  • Explain each of the types of software (Proprietary, OSS, SaaS)
  • Use web-based search engines to locate web resources efficiently
  • Use we-based and client based email platforms to send/receive mail, schedule appointments and meetings, and create to do lists
  • Use a word processor to create professional documents, from scratch, from built in templates and from custom templates
  • Use a spreadsheet to structure non-numerical data
  • Use a spreadsheet to structure and analyse numerical data
  • Use a spreadsheet to create surveys

The course will be spread over four classes during with time the following topics will be covered:

Week 1 - Introduction to Computers and the Internet

Week 2 - Email and Word Processing

Week 3 - Advanced Word Processing and Introduction to Spreadsheet

Week 4 - Advanced Spreadsheet Processing

Because of the intensive nature of the course, students are expected to attend all sessions unless an emergency prevents their attendance.
