The overall idea of the project is to enable the exchange of knowledge and transfer of good practice from R&D sector to practitioners in marine biotechnology, coastal tourism sectors as well as to students searching for education in a given field. Welcome to the course Blue Biotechnology for YOU!

Course objectives

This course aims to provide students with an understanding of marine biotechnology. The students will gain basic knowledge of the ocean at large, what drivers that are important in the oceans and which crucial functions influence the ocean production. The students will learn about the Baltic Sea in more detail, what makes the ocean a unique habitat and the challenges it is facing. The course introduces students to marine biotechnology and they will be provided with an overview of the marine resources that are important in this field. The students will be presented some interesting and important applications of marine biotechnology.

Course outcomes

By the end of this course, the students will be able to:

  • Explain important functions and processes in the ocean and how they are connected to each other
  • Gain knowledge in the importance of the ocean for the entire world
  • Understand important key factors that are influencing the oceans production
  • Understand the characteristics of the Baltic Sea
  • Understand the challenges and threats the Baltic Sea is facing and how they are connected to anthropogenic activity
  • Identify important marine organisms and resources that could be of interest in marine biotechnology
  • Gain knowledge in how marine organisms and resources are utilized in marine biotechnology
  • Understand the potential of marine biotechnology for a more sustainable future


Course structure and learning material

The course is divided into three sections: The Ocean, The Baltic Sea and Marine Biotechnology. Every section consists of one lecture, 4-5 additional reading and video material and one quiz. 


Requirements to pass this course

To complete this course, you should watch all video and reading material provided to you. You should get at least 60% on every quiz.
