Overview

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

        In this part of the course on Marine Natural Products (MNPs Toolbox) selected methods and techniques used in marine biotechnology are presented.

            In Module 1, students will learn about the diversity of marine microorganisms and their biotechnological potential. In Module 2, students will get acquainted with practical hints regarding isolation and cultivation of marine microorganisms. In addition, they will gain basic knowledge of extraction, isolation and identification of MNPs. In the last module (Module 3), the laboratory skills in the assessment of MNPS biological activity will be acquired.

 

COURSE OUTCOMES:

By the end of the course students will/ will be able to:

  • Understand why the diversity of marine microbes is important for blue biotechnology applications.
  • Describe the methods used to assess marine microbial diversity.
  • Gain knowledge about the importance of genetic modifications of marine microorganisms and the methods used in this process.
  • Know how to isolate and cultivate marine microorganisms from single cell or filament.
  • Become acquainted with extraction and isolation techniques of MNPs.
  • Assess antibacterial, cytotoxic and enzyme inhibition activity of MNPs.

 

COURSE STRUCTURE:

The course on Marine Natural Products Toolbox (MNPs Toolbox) is divided into three modules:

Module 1: Microorganisms as tools in marine biotechnology

Module 2: Methods used in marine biotechnology

2.1 Isolation and cultivation of microorganisms

2.2 Isolation and identification of compounds – laboratory-scale process

2.3 New extraction techniques of bioactive compounds from marine algae

Module 3: Activity assessment

3.1 Introduction to bioassays

3.2 In vitro assays

3.3 In vivo assays

3.4 In silico assays

 

LEARNING MATERIALS: 12 obligatory lectures, 6 obligatory infographics, 19 suggested readings (scientific papers in open access journals), 2 suggested commercial videos

Requirements to pass this course: to get the certificate you should complete three quizzes and get at least 60% of the total score: Quiz 1 (Module 1, 5 questions), Quiz 2 (Module 2, 6 questions), Quiz 3 (Module 3, 10 questions).

            What is important, you can follow the course at your own pace with no strict time limits for listening to the lectures or taking the tests. You can watch each lecture and take the quizzes as many times you like. We recommend you to listen to the materials in the order as they are presented - every subsequent lecture is somehow based on the previous one. When you complete the course with positive test results, you will receive a certificate.
