Welcome to the course "International Business Strategies of SMEs" and thanks for joining us!

The course is intended for students with a basic knowledge in business administration.  After completion of the course, the students will be  able to plan and manage internationalization  projects and actively support small enterprises to enter foreign markets.

This goal is reached by a combination of key knowledge areas needed for going international: international business strategy, international marketing, legal requirements and taxation, logistics and transportation, and financial planning including risk management.

The course is implemented in cooperation with SMEs in the Central-Baltic region. An integrated part of the course is the solving of real-life and cross-border assignments (CBAs) for SMEs wanting to go international. The CBAs will be reported both in class and to the commissioning company.

The course includes much e-learning material, but part of it is also recommended to be taught on- campus. Therefore, a blended-learning pedagogical approach is foreseen  

After completion of the course, students are expected to be able to

  • Understand the concept of internationalization, internationalization of SMEs;
  • Understand Business strategies in context of International Business
  • Analyze and choose a suitable entry mode in foreign market;
  • Create and defend a market entry plan for an international market;
  • Evaluate and explain the necessity of specific marketing activities according to the objective of the SME
  • Assist and provide consultation to those in need of legal inputs, taxation with respect to their business
  • Make an agreement, choose legal business entity and understand company registration process;
  • Compare different taxes and taxation approaches in a Nordic and Baltic context and to negotiate till successful deal and fill the necessary legal forms;
  • Have a systematic overview of the theoretical principles of logistics and understand the nature of logistics;
  • Know the basic concepts and essential key words of logistics;
  • Know the problems of logistics and is able to solve them within his/her area of competences.
  • Calculate the costs and incomes from exporting
  • Consider and manage the risks which will be faced in exporting.
