This is an advanced course that basically deals with aligning organizations objectives with the wants and needs of clients. The course consists of three modules. The first module provides discussion on process management theories such as six sigma and business process re-engineering (BPR) that lead to BPM. The second module provides an overview of BPM concepts, BPM principles and BPM practices. In this context it shows how BPM is evolving to enable process enterprises. The third module provides an overview of BPM systems and then illustrates how BPM systems fulfil the role as an enabler of process improvement in enterprises. Finally, based on lessons learned from theories and practice, a methodology to improve BPM solutions is provided.

Rational
The rapid development in Information Technology (IT) has enabled business organizations to exploit IT as a tool to obtain competitive advantage. A key ingredient in this endeavour is to apply Business Process Management (BPM) as a management practice. Graduates armed with appropriate knowledge in Management and Information Technology disciplines is desired by the industry to meet the industry and national requirements. Introduction of Business Process Management (BPM) in B.Sc. Business Administration (Information Systems) (Special) degree programme by the Department of Information Technology of Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka is aimed at meeting this demand. This module is the first of its kind in public university in Sri Lanka that combined Management and Information Technology disciplines for students in the faculty of Management Studies and Commerce.

The main objective of BPM is application of IT in business. This module has been specially designed to meet the aspirations of students who are seeking a careers in BPM with specialization in Information Systems, Business Analyst,System Analyst,Project Management,Quality Asurance, and System Auditing. In order to achieve the objective of the course module, it has been designed to equip graduates with theoretical knowledge as well as practical experience in BPM, through Action Research in Information Technology related domain.
