This course is a professional development SPOC (small private online course) on the fundamentals of Instructional Analysis and Design. It provides an introduction to learning theory, instructional design theory, instructional strategies and assessment techniques in the context of workplace training. The course is designed for training and instructional design professionals like you with little to no formal training in the field of instructional design.

Course Goals

You are expected to demonstrate the following skills upon completing the course:

  1. Analyze learner characteristics and training needs 
  2. Analyze content and learning objectives aligned to training needs
  3. Design training assessments and instructional strategies aligned to objectives
  4. Design training scope and sequence applying an instructional framework
  5. Present a training proposal and training plan to stakeholders

Instructional Mode and Materials

  • This course is run fully online (synchronous) according to the schedule set by your manager and the trainer. It is a post-requisite to BMU-SPOC1 entitled “Training and Instructional Design Team Foundations Course.”
  • Prepare ahead for the weekly online discussion on GotoMeeting. Each week, the trainer will provide the materials on the course site for you to

    1. Rothwell & Kazanas (1998). Mastering the Instructional Design Process
    2. Smith & Ragan (2005). Instructional Design
  • This course is project-based. There are no tests. You will also work on three major projects (training proposal, training plan, and a prototyle) either individually or with a team. These projects will require you to apply instructional design skills and help you practice the process of doing instructional analysis and design. Each week you will prepare specific outputs with a team  to gradually build up your major projects.

Course Policies

Attendance. You are expected to attend all online class discussions held on GotoMeeting each week. 

Missed / Late Assignments. All assignments / project outputs must be submitted on Eliademy or before the due date. In circumstances where you are not able to turn in your assignment on time, notify the trainer to arrange for an extension or special consideration. Unexcused late work will garner a one point deduction per day late.

Participation. Please prepare well before each online session by reading the materials and having answers ready to the questions posted online. You are able to download all materials and read them at your own time. It is encouraged that you ask questions to clarify processes or concepts that need more discussion or explanation.

Technology / Tools

Eliademy. Log on to to create a student account. You will be invited through email to join the online course. Please enroll yourself and read through the course materials.

GotoMeeting. Each week, you will receive an email with a GoTo meeting link or ID. Please log on to the meeting promptly. While GotoMeeting is accessible on your mobile devices, it is best to use a laptop or computer to view shared screens or to share your own screens when necessary.

It is recommended that you have consistent Internet access and a headset during online class sessions.  Maintain proper “netiquette” in online discussions, email, and other forms of communication in this class..

About Ms. K

Kiran Budhrani is an Ed.D. student in Educational Leadership and a graduate research assistant at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. She has 7 years experience teaching e-learning and instructional systems design in higher education, as well as, 10 years experience consulting with government and corporate sectors. She has been a consultant to Brady Corporation’s Instructional Design team for 5 years and occasionally volunteers to provide webinars and training for the professional development of employees in the company.
