The seminar will explore a wide spectrum of topics related to two major questions: (1) what is the relationship between media and power in American society; and (2) how is the power defined and represented in American media. The course is focused on examining the complex and increasingly pervasive impact of traditional and digital media on many aspects of American culture, from the concepts of democracy, identity and equality to the effects of media on politics, entertainment and social life. We will be working on a broad range of media including text, photograph, audio, video, film and graphics. The goal of the seminar is to equip the students with the tools for a critical analysis of the implications of media productions on the contemporary understanding of the concept of power in America.
