Course Description

HSC Area of Study Discovery: Creative Writing is a 5 hour course dedicated to the new Area of Study: Discovery. During this course, teachers will be introduced to strategies for teaching creative writing, which will enable them to both foster student engagement and improve their student’s creative responses in HSC assessments and examinations.

During this course, teachers will:

  • Learn strategies for teaching creative writing in the context of the new Area of Study: Discovery.
  • Engage in specific creative writing activities.
  • View and deconstruct exemplar creative writing pieces.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, teachers will be able to:

  • Identify the features of a skilfully written 'Discovery' creative piece.
  • Teach their students how to deconstruct the writing task.
  • Use a variety of creative writing activities with their students. 

Course Tasks

 To successfully complete this course, participants are required to complete and submit 4 tasks:

  1. Deconstructing the Writing Task
  2. Creative Writing Activities 
  3. Annotating and Marking a Creative Response
  4. Course Evaluation

How to Complete this Course

You can complete this course at your own pace.

It is, however, recommended that you progress through each Module in order, completing the Assessment Tasks at the suggested times.

  1. General Forum - this forum is for discussing any aspects of the course.
  2. Ideas for Student Creative Writing Activities - this forum encourages the sharing of ideas and classroom activities related to teaching creative writing. 

As collaboration is key to our craft, course participants are encouraged to contribute to these forums! 

Certificate of Completion

Once you have successfully completed all the required tasks for this course, you will be issued with a 'Certificate of Completion'.
