Overview

Research shows that optimal learning among adults versus children exists on a continuum, with andragogy at one end and pedagogy at the other.  Andragogy, or the process of teaching adults, incorporates learner driven instruction, while pedagogy, or the process of teaching children, emphasizes teacher driven instruction.

This unit focuses on how adults learn in the professional realm through workplace formal or informal training. The unit starts by distinguishing between professional development and professional learning. It will then describe ways through which adult learning is optimized and key differences between pedagogy and andragogy. Finally, a model of adult professional learning called the TRIO model will be offered as a tool on which to base training of adults in the workplace. 

Objectives

  • Learners will be able to identify key differences in andragogy and pedagogy
  • Learners will be able to identify ways through which adult learning is optimized
  • Learners will be able to distinguish between professional development and professional learning
  • Learners will be able to recall and apply the TRIO model of adult professional learning

Unit Structure

This unit takes you through 4 short modules pertaining to the topic of Adult Professional Learning. 

Your success in the unit will be measured in two ways: through completion of four tasks for a reward, and a comprehensive post-test at the end of the unit. 

As mentioned, this unit asks you to complete 4 activities, referred to in this unit as "Tasks". Once you successfully complete each task, you will gain a certificate of successful completion! If less 1 or more tasks are left incomplete or incorrect, you will be required to return to the corresponding module and redo the task. Certificates of completion are only granted once all 4 tasks are successfully completed.

The post-test at the end of the unit is a multiple choice comprehensive exam, covering content from all 4 modules.
