Beth Parker

Language & Culture Instructor

I have lived overseas in Sydney, Australia, Copenhagen, Denmark and Shanghai, China. I have traveled extensively and am currently studying Spanish and Mandarin. I understand what it is like to live in a different country and struggle to speak a foreign language, as well as what it feels like to experience Culture Shock. I have taught English as a Second Language for close to ten years. My teaching experience ranges from elementary school children through university students and beyond to business people. My strengths are in teaching non-native English speakers TOEFL skills, academic writing and American cultural understanding and I excel at conversational English, creative writing and professionalism and ethics. I am TEFL certified through i-to-i LoveTEFL.

Overview

International students planning to attend university (uni) in the United States will be faced with new courses, new and unfamiliar situations, systems, and expectations, and will be a long way away from their usual coping and support systems such as family and friends.

Recognizing that support needs for international students differ from national students, this course addresses American and academic culture, the English language, and culture shock.  It is intended to aide students in reducing stress, increasing academic skills, and enhancing campus and community life.

Welcome to the course!  I look forward to working with you to help you achieve success in your American academic endeavors.
