The overall goal of this class is to try and grasp as much as possible of the mathematics involved in the contemporary Algebraic Geometry proof of Fermat's Last Theorem by Andrew Wiles. This included, but will (probably) end up being not limited to :
- 'Elementary' approaches to Fermat's Equation (From Euler to Sophie Germain and Kummer)
- Elliptic functions
- Groups, Fields and Galois Theory
- Elliptic curves and their torsion group
- Modular forms
- Wiles's approach to the proof of the theorem.
