Louise Downham

Photographer

I’m a professional photographer specialised in natural yet striking child portraits and wedding photography. I feel very lucky to be doing what I love for a living! I really enjoy photographing children and weddings. I love knowing that moments that can never be recreated have been captured beautifully. I enjoy getting to know clients, and taking photographs that reflect their personalities. Clients often comment that that I put them at ease and were impressed by how unobtrusive I was. I offer private photography tuition and creative group workshops, helping people take their cameras off auto and take fantastic photographs. I was a regional finalist for the 2014 Wedding Industry Awards: Best Wedding Photographer. Before becoming a photographer in 2011, I was the photography curator and manager of the Viewfinder Photography Gallery; on the management committee of London Independent Photography, and the graphic designer for their magazine. I have an MA in Photography.

Great course - what ever your level

I wasn’t very confident with all the different camera settings and so never used them. Louise adjusts her training so that even a novice like me can get the most out of the course and not feel overwhelmed.

Superb instruction

I have done a course with Louise before and thoroughly enjoyed her approach. My photography came on leaps and bounds!

Overview

Take your camera off automatic mode and discover what it’s – and you’re! – capable of.

Learn how to get the most of your camera, at your own pace. Find out what the settings do, and become confident in using your camera properly. Find out about ISO, aperture, shutter speed, file types and sizes – and how you can use these tools to take stunning photographs.

You can start this course at any time you choose, and work through it at your own pace.

"Your course looks great. This is exactly the sort of thing that will make beginners more confident."

I was a regional finalist (London & the South-East) for the 2014 Wedding Industry Awards: Best Wedding Photographer, and was nominated for their Best Wedding Industry website.

Before becoming a photographer myself in 2011, I’d always worked in photography: I was the photography curator at the Viewfinder Photography Gallery for two years, and then their Chairperson and manager for three years; I was on the management committee of London Independent Photography, and the graphic designer for their magazine. I have an MA in Photography.

Comments from previous students:

“This was really useful.  Rather than covering just the mechanics of photography, Louise had lots of advice on how to take good photographs and how to get the best out of your camera, the subject and the environment.  Although I have been using a camera for years, I learned a great deal.  The session was well-planned. Time very well spent – now I just have to practice a lot!”

Michael

"I really enjoyed the workshop very much. The act of going and taking photographs with a time limit and having a set subject structure really helped and was a good exercise. Receiving feedback afterwards is also helpful. I look forward to participating again in the future.

Rupa

"I really enjoyed it. It has encouraged me to take more photos."

Claire

"It seemed quite daunting to just go out and "picture the moment" in a set time period. Would my technique/ability/knowledge be questioned? Well the answer to all these was ...yes, but only by myself, because the friendly atmosphere, encouragement and inspiration I experienced turned any self doubts I might possess into a positive determination to improve. Above all I had fun. Louise’s approach promotes self esteem with a good balance of learning through pleasure."

Barry

"Personally it was really worth doing the assignment on many levels. It was a real challenge going out and photographing with specific themes in mind. If I'd been wandering around normally, for that hour, I would have been focusing on entirely different subjects. I certainly wouldn't have normally approached the two skateboarders in the park and asked them if I could photograph them. Being on a workshop gave me the confidence that if someone were to challenge me and ask why I wanted to take their photograph, I had a good answer to give. I hope this will make more a little more confident to do so in the future. We'll see!"

Nigel

"The workshop was really enjoyable and has given me some ideas for future projects. Hope to attend some future workshops now I know it is such a stress-free and friendly experience!"
